Mountain biking is better when shared.
At Blackstone Valley NEMBA, group rides are the core of the NEMBA experience. It’s where friendships are built, trails are discovered, and new riders become part of the community. Gushy?
You bet but still, it’s an apt description nevertheless.
If you’re thinking about joining us for your first ride — or you’ve signed up and you’re wondering what to expect…
Here are five simple tips to help you feel ready and right at home on the trails.
Check the Ride Details Before You Roll
Obvious? Sure. But it’s a good reminder to make sure you reread all the details prior to the ride, not just skim the top level brief. Not all rides are the same. Some are relaxed cruises through mellow trails; others might be a little rowdier and technical.
Before heading out, check the event description:
- Skill Level: Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced.
- Mileage and Expected Pace: Some rides are shorter social spins; others might cover more ground.
- Meeting Location and Time: Always double-check the parking area. Some trailheads have multiple lots!
If you’re not sure whether a ride is a good fit, reach out. Ride leaders are happy to answer questions and help you find the right starting point.
NOTE: Skill Level and Pace aren't always a 1:1 relationship. You could experience a mellow pace ride with some pretty spicy technical sections.
Pack Light, but Pack Smart
You don’t need to carry a hardware store in your backpack — just the essentials:
- Helmet: This goes without saying, right? RIGHT?!?!
- Water: Enough for the ride — a bottle or hydration pack.
- Snack: A granola bar can be a lifesaver on a longer ride and a sugary treat like Welch’s gummies or Untapped Maple Gels can quickly ward off that feeling like you’re bonking.
- Basic Repair Kit: Spare tube, tire levers, mini-pump, multitool.
- Layers: If the weather’s changeable, bring a light jacket.
Being prepared means you can enjoy the ride without stressing if a bolt loosens or the weather shifts.
Show Up a Little Early
Plan to arrive about 10–15 minutes before the scheduled start.
You’ll have time to check your gear, meet the group, and get a quick overview of the ride plan. It’s also a chance to connect as Blackstone Valley NEMBA rides are casual and welcoming.
New faces are greeted warmly, and nobody’s keeping score.
Ride Your Ride
Ride Your Own Ride—I have been on a few group rides, and I am doing my best to keep up, and at times I am afraid to speak up to try something I couldn't get over.
Ride your abilities.
Ask the folks to stop if you are want to try a feature again

- Stay comfortable: Ride at a pace that feels good to you.
- Speak up: If you need to stop for a mechanical, a water break, or just to catch your breath, let someone know.
- No drop rides: Many of our rides have a sweep — someone who rides at the back to make sure no one gets left behind. Don’t say sorry! 🙂
The most important thing is having fun and enjoying the trails — not how fast you get through them.
Embrace the Community
One ride often leads to another and before you know it, you’ll start recognizing faces, learning new trail names, and finding a few new people to ride with.
Your first ride might just be the start of something bigger.
We’ll see you out there…
